Safe Home for Baby

Tonight Jared and I attended our first baby class at the hospital, which was "Safe Home for Baby". We went into the class skeptical about how they could possibly fill two hours with useful safety information, but we learned a TON and I am really glad that we went. It was also fun to talk to other couples who were expecting all around our due date.

Here are just a few of the interesting things we learned, which were all news to me!
  • Always keep Activated Charcoal on hand in case the baby swallows poison. The activated charcoal is mean to absorb poison in the GI tract.
  • The house temperature should always be set between 68 - 75 degrees F.
  • Always heat a baby bottle on the stove in boiling water vs. the microwave
  • NOTHING allowed in the crib with the baby - no blankets, pillows, or bumpers.
  • All kitchen knives should be removed from the knife block and into a latched drawer (bummer!)
  • Remove all small fridge magnets, as they are a choking hazard
  • The safest place for a car seat is in the middle of the back seat, rear facing.
  • Any tick found on a child usually needs 24 hours to pass limes disease, so get it off immediately and send the tick to a doctor for testing.
Our schedules in February and March are filling up with more classes at the hospital, which makes the imminent arrival of our baby boy even more real!
