Well...we have survived the first 48 hours at home with a newborn! Thankfully Jared is off work through next week, so it's been really nice having both of us here to help care for Layne. We are actually having a really good time taking care of him and I have yet to breakdown in a fit of tears, so that is more than I can ask for. At this point we're in a pretty routine schedule of change, eat, sleep, but the duration of timein between those activities is still varying and at this point we want him to gain as much weight as possible so I'm letting him call the shots on when he is hungry (he usually makes it at least an hour in between feedings, and if he sleeps longer than 3 hours I'll wake him up to feed). Unfortunately he likes to cluster feed at night, which has made for some sleepless nights for me, but luckily he seems pretty content after his 3am feeding so I've been able to sleep from about 3-6 or 7am both nights (which is what I'm operating off of at this point).
Layne has been a GREAT eater, and at our first doctor visit this morning he had already gained 2oz since being discharged from the hospital on Thursday, which apparently rarely happens with a strictly breast fed baby. The doctor was shocked. My milk has fully come in as of early this morning (it woke me up like an alarm...ouch), so hopefully he will now get even fuller at feedings and sleep longer in between each meal.
In regards to sleep, Layne sleeps like a champ all day, and then of course, gets fussy at night. We usually do a dance at night between his crib, rock n play, boppy and mommy or daddy's chest to see which might soothe him best at that moment, which lasts all night. I am not a big day sleeper/napper, so this has been a little tough on me, but I really don't feel as sleep deprived as I had imagined.
Early this morning was a big milestone...he pooped on us for the first time! Jared went to change his diaper, which looked clean, and literally as soon as we slid the clean diaper under his bum projectile liquid poop came flying out at both of us, and all over the new clean outfit I just put him in...nice.
Speaking of laundry...I can't believe how much laundry a new baby goes through! He goes through at least 3 outfits per day due to spit up, poop or pee, and we soil many of burp cloths and blankets due to the same. I'm washing our first of many loads of laundry as we speak.
In other news, I've been continuing to recover well and have been moving around well on my own. Grandma Kelley and Grandpa Tom get into town late tonight and we can't wait to see them!
Here are some of our favorite pictures from Layne's first 4 days of life...
