Two Month Checkup & First Trip to the ER

Layne and I had quite the experience on Tuesday.

We started the day out by taking Layne to his two-month checkup, which is a dreaded appointment because they have to get their first round of vaccines (I think he got four total). He did really well during the appointment, and the doctor said he looks healthy as can be. He weighed in at 12lbs 10oz (60% percentile), was 23 inches long (50% percentile) and his head circumference was still only 25% percentile...he's got a little head like his daddy...he definitely doesn't take after me there! They tested his stool because he's been having green poops the past two weeks, and I was happy that it didn't test positive for blood, which means he's not experiencing a bad reaction to something in my diet (like dairy, soy, etc.) During the shots he did ok...he cried a bit, as expected, but right afterwards I nursed him in the room and he calmed right down.

I thought I got out easy.

After we got home he began to get fussy and I could tell he was hurting. I checked his temp, because they said the shots could give him a low-grade fever, and he was fine. For the next few hours he went between sleeping and crying, and when he woke up from a nap screaming and in a sweat I took his temp again and it was 100.6. I wasn't too worried, but the doctor said to call for anything over 100.3, so I called the nurses line since the office was closed. The nurse told me that she was concerned with how high his temp was and that I had to take him to the ER. I was freaking out at this point, and of course, this was the one time that Jared was working a night shift all year, so I had to take him alone.

When I got to the ER, I was happy to see that no one else was there (the last thing I wanted was to put him into a room with a bunch of sick people). I told the front desk his temp and she got right out of her seat and went into the back. I thought that was a little weird, and a second later, a doctor came RUNNING out into the waiting room as fast as she could, and ushered us into the doors. I have never seen a doctor move so fast in my life, so I started to panic. As we were practically running to an exam room, she said to me, "I'll take a look at your baby but I don't think we can treat him here. His fever is too high and he'll need some labs run, so we'll have to get you to the hospital." I responded with, "What?! For 100.6?"

She stopped dead in her tracks, and you could see the relief run over her face.

"Ohhhh.....we though you said his temp was 106!" 100.6...no problem!

Must've been that Minnesota accent.

So after all that panic, they sent me home and told me to give him baby tylenol, which is what the nurse on the phone should've told me to begin with. I laid on the couch with him and did kangaroo care the rest of the night, and his fever broke and stayed down the rest of the night.

My doctor called me this morning to apologize that the nurses line sent me to the ER when they shouldn't have. Hmm...I'm thinking I just might send them the bill!

Good grief!
