This week started out a little tough, as our poor little guy started showing signs of reflux, which according to his doctor typically shows up around two weeks in age. He was spitting up during and after most feedings, which is pretty normal for a baby, but I became concerned when he started acting in serious pain after eating. He would cough, gasp for air, hold his breath, grunt and kick his legs - it both broke my heart and scared the crap out of me more quite a few times this week. I called the doctor almost every day with questions, and took him in on Wednesday morning to have her take a look. She said it sounded like classic reflux and prescribed him liquid Zantac. Initially I was going to hold off on giving it to him and try changing my diet first, but after another day of seeing him in such pain I gave in and started him on the medicine on Thursday night. It seems to be helping so far and while he still spits up he doesn't seem in pain anymore and has been acting more like the happy content baby he was the first two weeks, THANK GOD. I'm still going to alter my diet and I've stopped eating dairy and soy to see if that helps, and we're forcing him to take breaks and burp about every 5 minutes while he's eating, and we have to keep him upright for at least 15 minutes after a feeding. Thankfully he is still gaining a good amount of weight (he was up to 7lbs 13.5oz on Wednesday) and having a good number of wet/poopy diapers, so we know he's getting enough food.
Besides the stress of worrying about his health and being a typical paranoid first time mom, I'm loving being a mommy and spending time at home with him. We have been starting to get into a routine which has been nice. Layne is pretty regular with a 3 hour feeding schedule, but some nights he'll sleep 4-5 hours for me which feels like heaven :) We've been going on lots of walks and there have been days I have just held and cuddled him most of the day...sometimes I have a hard time putting him down...I just love him so much! Jared and I have also gotten braver about taking him out of the house, and we've already had a few dinners out with him. Our neighborhood is really family friendly and we're always happy to see we aren't the only couple out for dinner on a Friday night with a carseat in tow.
In other news, we got to view Layne's newborn photos this week! I'll be posting them next week when I get my DVD.
Here are some pictures from this week:
